Valley Rust Bucket – Miniature Ball Dahlia
Breeder: David and Leone Smith (United States, 2004)
Valley Rust Bucket is a legendary "workhorse" that is as reliable as its name suggests. A consistent winner on the exhibition circuit—including a 2022 "Cream of the Crop" recognition—this variety is a favorite for both home gardeners and professional florists. It is celebrated for its rich, earthy tones and incredible productivity, pumping out perfectly formed blooms on long, weatherproof stems from mid-summer until the first hard frost.
Color Profile: A moody and sophisticated blend featuring deep rusty-orange petals with a striking crimson or burgundy reverse. This "flashback" of color gives the blooms incredible dimension in bouquets.
Perfect Form: A Miniature Ball (MB) type with a dense, symmetrical, and globular shape. Its tight petal structure makes it exceptionally durable and long-lasting after harvest.
Bloom Size: Produces tidy, versatile 2–3.5" blossoms, the ideal scale for fall-themed arrangements and market bouquets.
Plant Height: Reaches a stately and vigorous 4' tall (48") with a prolific, multi-branching habit.
Design Appeal: An essential variety for the "earthy" or "terracotta" wedding aesthetic. It pairs effortlessly with other autumn favorites like Cornel Bronze and Terracotta.
